Symmetry Special Issue

2021-02-08

The special issue "Bioinformatics and Statistics" of Symmetry journal(a peer-reviewed open access journal ISSN 2073-8994, I.F. 2019: 2.645) is now open to receive submissions.

In the last decades, advances in high throughput technologies have allowed scientists to collect massive omics datasets. International projects and consortia made different types of omics data publicly available. Examples span from transcriptomics to epigenomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. Moreover, scientists can also collect heterogenous multi-omic information on the same samples, allowing to elucidate the interplay role of different cellular components. However, the difficulty in defining an appropriate statistical methodology to analyze the data and integrate diverse sources of information and the limited availability of efficient algorithms and software tools hinder the possibility of investigating fundamental cellular mechanisms and understanding disease onset and progression.

This gap prompted us to highlight the statistical data analysis challenges and collect novel emerging statistical methods for omics data analysis and integration in a thematic issue on Bioinformatics and Statistics. Manuscripts that report novel software tools and efficient algorithms are very welcome too.

Keywords Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

- Penalized statistical methods for omics data

- Statistical methods for omics data integration

- Machine Learning and Deep learning approaches in bioinformatics

- Mathematical and probabilistic models in biology

- Multitask learning in biological applications

- Network analysis and omics data

- Computational and statistical tools in bioinformatics

- High dimensional data visualization
