TEXTAROSSA (Towards EXtreme scale Technologies and AcceleRatOrS for HW / SW Supercomputing Applications for exascale) Project

The IAC is one of the partners of the TEXTAROSSA European project, which aims to contribute to research on High-Performance Computing infrastructures for the construction of the exascale supercomputer.

TEXTAROSSA, a project co-funded by the European High Performance Computing (EuroHPC) Joint Undertaking to design and implement innovative methodologies in the efficient use of advanced HPC systems, began on 1st April.

TEXTAROSSA (Towards EXtreme scale Technologies and AcceleRatOrS for HW / SW Supercomputing Applications for exascale) is funded by EuroHPC, as part of the call EuroHPC-01-2019 / Extreme-scale computing and data-driven technologies.

The three-year project, led by ENEA (Italy), aggregates 17 institutions and companies located in 5 European countries (Italy, France, Poland, Germany, and Spain).

The TEXTAROSSA project aims to achieve a broad impact on the High-Performance Computing (HPC) field in pre-exascale and exascale scenarios. The TEXTAROSSA consortium will develop new hardware accelerators, innovative two-phase cooling equipment, advanced algorithms, methods, and software products for traditional HPC domains and emerging domains in High-Performance Artificial Intelligence (HPC-AI) and High-Performance Data Analytics (HPDA).

To achieve high performance and high energy efficiency on near-future exascale computing systems, a technology gap needs to be bridged: increase the efficiency of computation with extreme efficiency in HW and new arithmetics as providing methods and tools for seamless integration of reconfigurable accelerators in heterogeneous HPC multi-node platforms. TEXTAROSSA aims at tackling this gap through applying a co-design approach to develop heterogeneous HPC solutions, supported by the integration and extension of IPs, programming models, and tools derived from other European research projects led by TEXTAROSSA partners. The TEXTAROSSA consortium will develop new hardware accelerators, innovative two-phase cooling, methods, algorithms, and advanced software products. The consortium will test these technologies on the Integrated Development Vehicles (IDV) mirroring and extending the European Processor Initiative’s ARM64-based architecture, and on an OpenSequana testbed.

To guide the development of the technology and evaluate the impact of the proposed innovations, the project will use a selected but representative number of HPC applications, ranging from the cores of a general-purpose scientific library to applications in traditional sectors such as high-energy physics. Simulation of gas and oil fields, climate modeling, up to emerging domains such as data analysis and artificial intelligence.

The IAC will design and develop high-performance numerical methods and algorithms to create a scientific library (MathLib) for applications at extreme scales.
