Controlled release of a drug contained in a spherical polymer capsule is of significant interest in many fields of medicine. There is growing interest in tailoring the erosion properties of the drug to help control and optimize the drug release process. Theoretical understanding of the nature of drug release from a bioerodible capsule is, therefore, important for designing effective drug delivery systems.

In this perspective we take stock of the current state of the art of computational models for droplets microfluidics and we suggest some strategies which may open the way to the full-scale simulation of microfluidic phenomena with interfaces, from near-contact interactions to the device operational lengths.

In this paper, we numerically investigate the breakup dynamics of droplets in an emulsion flowing in a tapered microchannel with a narrow constriction. The mesoscale approach for multicomponent fluids with near contact interactions is shown to capture the deformation and breakup dynamics of droplets interacting within the constriction, in agreement with experimental evidence. In addition, it permits us to investigate in detail the hydrodynamic phenomena occurring during breakup stages.

Blue phases are liquid crystals made up by networks of defects, or disclination lines. While existing phase diagrams show a striking variety of competing metastable topologies for these networks, very little is known as to how to kinetically reach a target structure, or how to switch from one to the other, which is of paramount importance for devices. We theoretically identify two confined blue phase I systems in which by applying an appropriate series of electric field it is possible to select one of two bistable defect patterns.

Blue phases are networks of disclination lines, which occur in cholesteric liquid crystals near the transition to the isotropic phase. They have recently been used for the new generation of fast switching liquid crystal displays. Here we study numerically the steady states and switching hydrodynamics of blue phase I (BPI) and blue phase II (BPII) cells subjected to an electric field.

We investigate the switching dynamics of multistable nematic liquid crystal devices. In particular, we identify a remarkably simple two-dimensional device which exploits hybrid alignment at the surfaces to yield a bistable response. We also consider a three-dimensional tristable nematic device with patterned anchoring, recently implemented in practice, and discuss how the director and disclination patterns change during switching.

We present computer simulations of the response of a flexoelectric blue phase network, either in bulk or under confinement, to an applied field. We find a transition in the bulk between the blue phase I disclination network and a parallel array of disclinations along the direction of the applied field. Upon switching off the field, the system is unable to reconstruct the original blue phase but gets stuck in a metastable phase. Blue phase II is comparatively much less affected by the field.

The aim of this talk is to show how de la Vallee Poussin type interpolation based on Chebyshev zeros of rst kind, can be applied to resize an arbitrary color digital image. In fact, using such kind of approximation, we get an image scaling method running for any desired scaling factor or size, in both downscaling and upscaling. The peculiarities and the performance of such method will be discussed.

This work introduces a novel extension of the 0/1 Knapsack Problem in which we consider the existence of so-called forfeit sets. A forfeit set is a subset of items of arbitrary cardinality, such that including a number of its elements that exceeds a predefined allowance threshold implies some penalty costs to be paid in the objective function value. A global upper bound on these allowance violations is also considered.
