On the dynamics of an intraguild predator-prey model

An intraguild predator-prey model with a carrying capacity proportional to the biotic resource, is generalized by introducing a Holling type II functional response. The longtime behaviour of solutions is analyzed and, in particular, absorbing sets in the phase space are determined. The existence of biologically meaningful equilibria (boundary and internal equilibria) has been investigated. Linear and nonlinear stability conditions for biologically meaningful equilibria are performed.

Corner-transport-upwind lattice Boltzmann model for bubble cavitation

Aiming to study the bubble cavitation problem in quiescent and sheared liquids, a third-order isothermal lattice Boltzmann model that describes a two-dimensional (2D) fluid obeying the van der Waals equation of state, is introduced. The evolution equations for the distribution functions in this off-lattice model with 16 velocities are solved using the corner-transport-upwind (CTU) numerical scheme on large square lattices (up to 6144 x 6144 nodes).

A coupled lattice Boltzmann-Multiparticle collision method for multi-resolution hydrodynamics

In this work we discuss the coupling of two mesoscopic approaches for fluid dynamics, namely the lattice Boltzmann method (LB) and the multiparticle collision dynamics (MPCD) [20] to design a new class of flexible and efficient multiscale schemes based on a dual representation of the fluid observables.

Optimal spatiotemporal control of Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle in the Alta Murgia National Park

The threat, impact and management problems associated with alien plant invasions are increasingly becoming a major issue in environmental conservation. Invasive species cause significant damages, and high associated costs. Controlling them cost-effectively is an ongoing challenge, and mathematical models and optimizations are becoming increasingly popular as a tool to assist managers. The aim of this study is to develop a modelling approach for the optimal spatiotemporal control of invasive species in natural protected areas of high conservation value.

Coupled SPH-FV method with net vorticity and mass transfer

Recently, an algorithm for coupling a Finite Volume (FV) method, that discretize the Navier-Stokes equations on block structured Eulerian grids, with the weakly-compressible Lagrangian Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) was presented in [16]. The algorithm takes advantage of the SPH method to discretize flow regions close to free-surfaces and of the FV method to resolve the bulk flow and the wall regions. The continuity between the two solutions is guaranteed by overlapping zones.

Experimental and numerical investigation of propeller loads in off-design conditions

The understanding of the performance of a propeller in realistic operative conditions is nowadays a key issue for improving design techniques, guaranteeing safety and continuity of operation at sea, and reducing maintenance costs. In this paper, a summary of the recent research carried out at CNR-INSEAN devoted to the analysis of propeller loads in realistic operative scenarios, with particular emphasis on the in-plane loads, is presented.

Context-Awareness Mobile Devices for Traffic Incident Prevention

Several techniques have been developed in last years by automotive industry in order to protect drivers and car passengers. These methods, for instance the automatic brake systems and the cruise control, are able to intervene when there is a dangerous situation. With the aim to minimize these risks, in this paper we propose a method able to suggest to the driver the driving style to adopt in order to avoid dangerous situations.

Community effort endorsing multiscale modelling, multiscale data science and multiscale computing for systems medicine

Systems medicine holds many promises, but has so far provided only a limited number of proofs of principle. To address this road block, possible barriers and challenges of translating systems medicine into clinical practice need to be identified and addressed. The members of the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action CA15120 Open Multiscale Systems Medicine (OpenMultiMed) wish to engage the scientific community of systems medicine and multiscale modelling, data science and computing, to provide their feedback in a structured manner.
