In the framework of "MaddMaths!" (https://maddmaths.simai.eu/), an initiative of SIMAI (Italian Society of Applied and Industrial Mathematics), I was asked to write a short review about the role of the mathematical models in the design of a race sailing yacht. In this short paper, an overview of the application of simulation tools for the design and optimization of a sailing yacht are presented. It was the issue n. 3/2014 of MaddMaths!.
