TEXTAROSSA: Towards EXtreme scale Technologies and Accelerators for euROhpc hw/Sw Supercomputing Applications for exascale

To achieve high performance and high energy efficiency on near-future exascale computing systems, three key technology gaps needs to be bridged. These gaps include: energy efficiency and thermal control; extreme computation efficiency via HW acceleration and new arithmetics; methods and tools for seamless integration of reconfigurable accelerators in heterogeneous HPC multi-node platforms.

Fractional Orlicz-Sobolev spaces and their limits

We establish versions for fractional Orlicz-Sobolev seminorms, built upon Young functions, of the Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu theorem on the limit as s ->1^-, and of the Maz'ya-Shaposhnikova theorem on the limit as s->0^-, dealing with classical fractional Sobolev spaces. As regards the limit as s ->1^-, Young functions with an asymptotic linear growth are also considered in connection with the space of functions of bounded variation. Concerning the limit as s->0^+, Young functions fulfilling the \Delta_2-condition are admissible.

Game of neutrophils: modeling the balance between apoptosis and necrosis

Background: Neutrophils are one of the key players in the human innate immune system (HIIS). In the event of an insult where the body is exposed to inflammation triggering moieties (ITMs), neutrophils are mobilized towards the site of insult and antagonize the inflammation. If the inflammation is cleared, neutrophils go into a programmed death called apoptosis.

Estimation algorithm for a hybrid pde-ode model inspired by immunocompetent cancer-on-chip experiment

The present work is motivated by the development of a mathematical model mimicking the mechanisms observed in lab-on-chip experiments, made to reproduce on microfluidic chips the in vivo reality. Here we consider the Cancer-on-Chip experiment where tumor cells are treated with chemotherapy drug and secrete chemical signals in the environment attracting multiple immune cell species. The in silico model here proposed goes towards the construction of a "digital twin" of the experimental immune cells in the chip environment to better understand the complex mechanisms of immunosurveillance.

Numerical High-Field Limits in Two-Stream Kinetic Models and 1D Aggregation Equations

Numerical resolution of two-stream kinetic models in a strong aggregative setting is considered. To illustrate our approach, we consider a one-dimensional kinetic model for chemotaxis in hydrodynamic scaling and the high field limit of the Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck system. A difficulty is that, in this aggregative setting, weak solutions of the limiting model blow up in finite time, and therefore the scheme should be able to handle Dirac measures.

COVID-19 cumulative incidence, intensive care, and mortality in Italian regions compared to selected European countries

Background: The high contagiousness and rapid spreading of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused a high number of critical to severe life-threatening cases, which required urgent hospital admission and treatment in intensive care units (ICUs). The pandemic has been a tough test for all European national health systems and their capability to provide an adequate reaction. Methods: The present work aims to reveal correlations between parameters such as COVID-19 incidence, ICU bed occupancy, ICU excess area, and mortality in Italian regions.
