Qualitative analysis and numerical approximation of an optimal control model for invasivespecies

Invasive species cause huge amounts of environmental, economic, social and cultural damage in Europe and worldwide. Improving measures to control them is an ongoing challenge, and mathematical modeling and optimization are becoming increasingly popular as a tool to assist management (1; 2; 4). We analyse an optimal control model for the control of invasive species which aims to find the best temporal resource allocation strategy for the population reduction, under a budget constraint (3).

Lattice Boltzmann simulations of stochastic thin film dewetting

We study numerically the effect of thermal fluctuations and of variable fluid-substrate interactions on the spontaneous dewetting of thin liquid films. To this aim, we use a recently developed lattice Boltzmann method for thin liquid film flows, equipped with a properly devised stochastic term. While it is known that thermal fluctuations yield shorter rupture times, we show that this is a general feature of hydrophilic substrates, irrespective of the contact angle $\theta$. The ratio between deterministic and stochastic rupture times, though, decreases with $\theta$.

The study takes up some issues relating to the location of the workshops that produced the valuable figured ambers that marked the aristocratic burials of southern Italy from the eighth to fifth century BC. The contribution of findings and recent studies enabled us to assign some groups of artifacts to the activity of different workshops and even to identify outstanding artistic personalities, highlighting the undeniable stylistic connections between them.

ZBTB2 protein is a new partner of the Nucleosome Remodeling and Deacetylase (NuRD) complex

ZBTB2 is a protein belonging to the BTB/POZ zinc-finger family whose members typically contain a BTB/POZ domain at the N-terminus and several zinc-finger domains at the C-terminus. Studies have been carried out to disclose the role of ZBTB2 in cell proliferation, in human cancers and in regulating DNA methylation. Moreover, ZBTB2 has been also described as an ARF, p53 and p21 gene repressor as well as an activator of genes modulating pluripotency. In this scenario, ZBTB2 seems to play many functions likely associated with other proteins.

Global mean sea level rise associated with global warming has a major impact on coastal areas and represents one of the significant natural hazards. The Asia-Pacific region, which has the highest concentration of human population in the world, represents one of the larger areas on Earth being threatened by the rise of sea level. Recent studies indicate a global sea level of 3.2 mm/yr as measured from 20 years of satellite altimetry. The combined effect of sea level rise and local land subsidence, can be overwhelming for coastal areas.

BootCMatchG: An adaptive Algebraic MultiGrid linear solver for GPUs

Sparse solvers are one of the building blocks of any technology for reliable and high-performance scientific and engineering computing. In this paper we present a software package which implements an efficient multigrid sparse solver running on Graphics Processing Units. The package is a branch of a wider initiative of software development for sparse Linear Algebra computations on emergent HPC architectures involving a large research group working in many application projects over the last ten years.
