Neural Network Approach to Forecast Hourly Intense Rainfall Using GNSS Precipitable Water Vapor and Meteorological Sensors

This work presents a methodology for the short-term forecast of intense rainfall based on a neural network and the integration of Global Navigation and Positioning System (GNSS) and meteorological data. Precipitable water vapor (PWV) derived from GNSS is combined with surface pressure, surface temperature and relative humidity obtained continuously from a ground-based meteorological station. Five years of GNSS data from one station in Lisbon, Portugal, are processed. Data for precipitation forecast are also collected from the meteorological station.

Confidentiality and availability issues in mobile unattended wireless sensor networks

In Mobile Unattended Wireless Sensor Networks (MUWSNs), nodes sense the environment and store the acquired data until the arrival of a trusted data sink. MUWSNs, other than being a reference model for an increasing number of military and civilian applications, also capture a few important characteristics of emerging computing paradigms like Participatory Sensing (PS). In this paper, we start by identifying the main features and issues of MUWSNs, revising the related work in the area and highlighting their shortcomings.

Quantum Trajectories for the Dynamics in the Exact Factorization Framework: A Proof-of-Principle Test

In the framework of the exact factorization of the time-dependent electron-nuclear wave function, we investigate the possibility of solving the nuclear time-dependent Schrödinger equation based on trajectories. The nuclear equation is separated in a Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the phase of the wave function, and a continuity equation for its (squared) modulus. For illustrative adiabatic and nonadiabatic one-dimensional models, we implement a procedure to follow the evolution of the nuclear density along the characteristics of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation.

May personality influence the selection of life-long mate? A multivariate predictive model

The idea that individuals tend to choose a romantic partner following similarities on personality traits has always attracted much attention in the psychological literature, although results were controversial. We conducted a new data analysis approach to personality traits of 235 newlywed couples. Univariate analysis revealed that a neurotic husband is usually paired with a lesser extrovert and open wife.

A NONLINEAR PARABOLIC-HYPERBOLIC SYSTEM FOR CONTACT INHIBITION AND A DEGENERATE PARABOLIC FISHER KPP EQUATION

We consider a mathematical model describing population dynamics of normal and abnormal cell densities with contact inhibition of cell growth from a theoretical point of view. In the first part of this paper, we discuss the global existence of a solution satisfying the segregation property in one space dimension for general initial data. Here, the term segregation property means that the different types of cells keep spatially segregated when the initial densities are segregated.

Accuracies of Soil Moisture Estimations Using a Semi-Empirical Model over Bare Soil Agricultural Croplands from Sentinel-1 SAR Data

This study describes a semi-empirical model developed to estimate volumetric soil moisture (<mml:semantics>theta v</mml:semantics>) in bare soils during the dry season (March-May) using C-band (5.42 GHz) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery acquired from the Sentinel-1 European satellite platform at a 20 m spatial resolution. The semi-empirical model was developed using backscatter coefficient (<mml:semantics>sigma degrees dB</mml:semantics>) and in situ soil moisture collected from Siruguppa taluk (sub-district) in the Karnataka state of India.

Scattering of tidally interacting bodies in post-Minkowskian gravity

The post-Minkowskian approach to gravitationally interacting binary systems (i.e., perturbation theory in G, without assuming small velocities) is extended to the computation of the dynamical effects induced by the tidal deformations of two extended bodies, such as neutron stars. Our derivation applies general properties of perturbed actions to the effective field theory description of tidally interacting bodies. We compute several tidal invariants (notably the integrated quadrupolar and octupolar actions) at the fast post-Minkowskian order.
